The European aggregate stands at 257 701 thousand tonnes. Reporting harvests at a standardised humidity level is what makes cereal volumes comparable between countries and years.
The five highest values in 2024 are recorded by European Union (EU6-1958, EU9-1973, EU10-1981, EU12-1986, EU15-1995, EU25-2004, EU27-2007, EU28-2013, EU27-2020) (257 701), France (53 554), Türkiye (39 922), Germany (39 052), Poland (34 346), all expressed in thousand tonnes. At the opposite end of the distribution sit Malta (0.00), Iceland (5.14), Montenegro (7.74), Cyprus (28.0), Luxembourg (140.8). while the median country reports 3 215 thousand tonnes against a mean of 14 968 thousand tonnes.
Dispersion is wide: the standard deviation across countries is 41 871 thousand tonnes, giving a coefficient of variation of 279.7%. The mean sits above the median, which indicates that the distribution is pulled by the upper tail rather than being symmetric. Any European average quoted for this indicator therefore describes a synthetic country that few Member States resemble.
Between 2015 and 2024 the summed value across the 36 countries reporting in both periods moved by -13.8%. The largest relative increases are observed in Poland (+25.0%), Kosovo* (+22.7%), Croatia (+19.3%); the largest decreases, or the smallest increases, in Cyprus (-68.2%), Belgium (-38.3%), Netherlands (-36.2%). Because the panel is held constant, this change is not an artefact of countries entering or leaving the sample.
Higher values are the policy-preferred direction for this indicator, so the countries listed at the bottom of the distribution mark the effective size of the European gap: closing it to the level of the fifth-ranked country would require the lowest performer to move by 34 346 thousand tonnes. Source: Eurostat, dataset apro_cpsh1 ('Crop production in EU standard humidity'), extracted from the Eurostat dissemination API (JSON-stat 2.0) on the dataset update of 2026-07-20. Filter dimensions: crops=C0000; strucpro=HPRD_HUMD_EU_THS_T. Unit of measure: thousand tonnes. Reference period: 2024. Geographic perimeter: national reporting units with two-character geo codes (38 countries with a non-missing observation); European and euro-area aggregates are excluded from the cross-country statistics and reported separately. Descriptive statistics (mean, median, population standard deviation, coefficient of variation) are computed unweighted over reporting countries. Change over time is computed on a constant panel: only countries with a non-missing observation in both the base and the reference period enter the calculation, which removes composition effects but may differ from the officially published aggregate. No imputation, seasonal adjustment or re-scaling has been applied beyond what Eurostat performs at source. Flagged provisional and estimated observations are retained as published.
